Arthritis & Joint Care in Kensington and Chelsea

Many people with arthritis live full, active lives with minimal discomfort when they have the right support. At West London Physiotherapy, we specialise in helping you manage joint pain, improve mobility, and stay active for longer.

Our team has extensive experience treating osteoarthritis and other joint conditions — from early conservative management through to pre- and post-surgical rehabilitation.

Who We Help

We work with patients who are:

  • Living with osteoarthritis in the knee, hip, shoulder, or spine
  • Managing inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis
  • Recovering from joint replacement surgery (hip, knee, shoulder)
  • Looking to delay or avoid surgery through conservative care
  • Seeking safe, structured exercise programmes to stay active with arthritis

Our Approach

Every arthritis journey is different. We take time to understand your needs and goals before building a tailored plan, which may include:

  • Targeted exercise therapy to build strength, flexibility, and joint function
  • Movement retraining to optimise how your joints handle load
  • Manual therapy and mobilisation to ease stiffness and improve comfort
  • Education and self-management strategies to help you control symptoms
  • Lifestyle and activity advice on pacing, weight management, and safe exercise
  • Pain management support, including medication prescribing where appropriate
  • Referrals for imaging or injections when further interventions are needed

We also work closely with trusted orthopaedic surgeons and rheumatologists. If surgery becomes necessary, we help you prepare and recover with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a GP referral?

No referral is needed. If your GP has already suggested physiotherapy or joint injections, we can take it from there — and if not, we can assess you independently and coordinate care with your GP where helpful. No referral is needed. How many sessions will I need?

Arthritis management is often an ongoing process rather than a fixed course of treatment. Many patients attend an initial intensive phase of 6–10 sessions, then transition to periodic maintenance or an independent home programme. We will give you a clear plan at your first assessment.

Is physiotherapy covered by insurance?

Yes — we are recognised by all major health insurers. Some insurers also cover ongoing management for chronic conditions. However, check with your insurer about your specific policy, and our team can advise on what to expect.

Can physiotherapy really help arthritis — I thought it was permanent?

While the degenerative changes in a joint cannot be reversed, the inflammation caused by them can be reduced considerably. Specific exercise therapy, movement retraining, and education have strong evidence behind them for reducing pain and improving function — often significantly. Many of our arthritis patients go on to delay or entirely avoid joint replacement surgery. We can also arrange medication or injections if indicated. The earlier you start, the better the results.

Is it safe to exercise with arthritis?

Yes — and it is one of the most important things you can do. Gentle, targeted exercise reduces pain, strengthens the muscles around joints, and improves overall function. Our physiotherapists will design a safe programme tailored to your joints, your fitness level, and your daily life. You will never be asked to push through damaging pain.

Can you help me avoid surgery?

In many cases, yes. Evidence-based physiotherapy — combined with advice on activity modification and, where appropriate, referral for injections — can significantly reduce pain and may allow you to avoid or delay joint replacement surgery. We will be honest with you about what is realistic for your specific situation.
