Private MRI Referral in Kensington and Chelsea

At West London Physiotherapy, we know how important it is to get the right diagnosis quickly. That’s why our physiotherapists can refer you directly for private MRI scans — as well as X-rays or ultrasound where appropriate — avoiding the long waits of NHS pathways.

This means faster answers, earlier treatment, and peace of mind.

When is an MRI Needed?

For many muscle, joint, and tendon injuries, a thorough physiotherapy assessment is usually enough to make a diagnosis. In fact, most conditions respond best to treatment without the need for scans.

However, imaging can sometimes provide valuable reassurance or essential detail. We may recommend an MRI to:

  • Confirm or rule out a suspected ligament or cartilage tear
  • Identify the cause of pain when the diagnosis is unclear
  • Guide decisions about surgery or medical interventions
  • Assess injuries that haven’t improved with standard treatment

We may also suggest an X-ray for fractures or arthritis changes, or ultrasound for tendon and soft tissue injuries.

How the Process Works

  1. Assessment — Your physiotherapist completes a thorough clinical assessment to decide whether imaging is appropriate.
  2. Referral — If needed, we refer you directly to a trusted local imaging centre.
  3. Fast Access — Appointments are usually available within just a few days.
  4. Results & Next Steps — Results are sent directly to us, so we can review them with you and adjust your treatment plan.
  5. Further Care if Needed — If specialist input is required, we work closely with leading orthopaedic surgeons and sports physicians for seamless onward referral.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a GP referral to get a private MRI?

No — you do not need a GP referral. As qualified physiotherapists, we can assess you and refer you directly for a private MRI, X-ray, or ultrasound if imaging is clinically indicated. This is faster and often more convenient than going through your GP.

Do I definitely need a scan, or can you assess me without one?

In most cases, a thorough physiotherapy assessment is sufficient to reach a clear diagnosis and begin treatment. We only recommend imaging when it will genuinely change your management — for example, to confirm a suspected ligament or cartilage tear, or when pain has not resolved as expected. We will never refer you for a scan you do not need.

How quickly can I get my MRI results?

Private MRI appointments are usually available within 1-2 days. Results are typically returned within 24 hours of the scan. We then review the results with you, explain what they show in plain language, and adjust your treatment plan accordingly.

How much does a private MRI cost?

Costs vary depending on the body part and the imaging centre used. But typically range from £250-£400. If you have private health insurance, your insurer may cover the cost of imaging when referred by a registered clinician such as our physiotherapists. Check with your insurer.

What happens after my scan results come back?

Your physiotherapist will review the report with you in detail. If further specialist input is required — such as a consultation with a surgeon or sports physician — we have established relationships with leading London specialists and can facilitate a fast referral. We manage your journey from scan to treatment seamlessly.
